GFS Black Division Jackpot owned by Maree and Adrian Van Bellen’s finished the CYCA Short Offshore Points series with Division 1 handicap win, 5 points ahead of the second placed boat. Jackpot also finished 6th (out of 17) in the extremely competitive Division 1 of IRC.
Another GFS yacht Velocity, Brian Carrick finished the same series with a credible 7th with Soundtrack, John Amos just 2 places further back on handicap in division 2 of the same series.
New member Michael Groves won the recent Jeanneau rendezvous regatta in Aggrovation on the Pittwater, not too bad in a boat that literally was just launched a couple of months ago.
Greenwich Flying Squadron is a sailing Club affiliated to Yachting NSW and Yachting Australia (YA), this affiliation means that GFS is part of the broader sailing community bringing with it many benefits, tangible as well as more abstract. YA holds a Personal Accident Insurance Policy that provides insurance to all current registered Club Members, providing insurance cover while participating in Sailing. All GFS on water events are conducted in accordance with the Racing Rules of Sailing 2013-2016. Rules 46 and 56 relate to those in charge and crews’ membership of an affiliated sailing Club, rule 56 allows for a non member to participate in 3 races in any one sailing season. To comply with the Racing Rules of Sailing and provide all crew with the benefits of YA membership, we should ensure they are members of a YA affiliated Club, GFS Crew membership forms can be found here and the joining process is outlined on the Membership Page of this site or click here.
Your Club has recently acquired a defibrillator, an important first aid asset that hopefully will never be needed.
It is our intention that initially all committee members will be certified in its use.
We are fortunate to have a well-equipped clubhouse. While it maybe not on the same level as some of our more ritzy compatriots further east, you only have to sit on the deck at sunset on a balmy Sydney evening to realise how fortunate we are.
In the main members and their guests do the right thing, but just occasionally standards do slip. So a few gentle reminders:
- If you use it, clean it (if necessary) and return it to where you got it from.
- If you opened, also close it.
- If it has a lock make sure it is locked before the last person leaves.
- If you tuned it on, make sure it is turned off.
- The only vessels which are permitted to be cleaned or maintained at the Club are those on the Club register and belonging to a financial members.
- Make sure the alarm is armed when the last person leaves the club.
- If you are not the last to leave a gentle reminder to those still present to lock up would not be taken as an insult but would demonstrate your care for your Club.

Dave and Elaine Edmiston’s Jeanneau 37 Passion from GFS finished 6th in the Performance Cruising Division of the recent Sail Port Stephens Regatta. Despite improvements to the boat in the past season Dave was unable to repeat last year’s performance which saw Passion win the regatta. It was all very close with Passion despite finishing 6th being just two points off first place.

The increasingly popular series saw some close racing and testing conditions. On the first day the off shore race around three islands (Cabbage Tree, Little and Boondelbah Is.) was an endurance classic only finishing in under the five hour limit when the race committee shortened the course.
